The TA8189N is a monolithic bipolar-junction-transistor (BJT) quad preamplifier specially tailored for double-cassette tape recorders. It integrates four independent amplifier channels two for playback and two for recording into a single 12-pin DIP package. Playback channels include a built-in equalizer switch to select between normal and metal tape types, while recording channels feature an automatic level control (ALC) detector to maintain consistent output levels despite varying input amplitudes.

Each channel comprises a low-noise input stage with bias stabilization, a main gain stage optimized for tape head impedance, and an output stage that drives mixing or recording circuitry. The playback section provides a MIX OUT terminal to select music from either cassette deck, and the ALC circuit in the record channels uses an external timing capacitor to set attack/release characteristics. All channels share a common ground and VCC pin, simplifying PCB layout and reducing component count.

By combining playback, recording, EQ switching, mixing, and ALC functions into one device, the TA8189N dramatically reduces board space and parts count. Its wide supply-voltage range (4.0 – ZKEEP0Z) and robust thermal characteristics make it suitable for both portable and bench-top tape-recorder designs. With a typical weight of only ZKEEP1Z, it supports compact, high-reliability audio systems.
