الP87C055BBPNB is a dedicated microcontroller designed by Philips Semiconductors specifically for television and video (MTV) applications. It is derived from the industry-standard 80C51 microcontroller core but is optimized to serve as the central control unit in TV receivers and tuners, integrating specialized functions not found in generic microcontrollers.

A key feature of this controller is its advanced integrated On-Screen Display (OSD) subsystem. It includes a dedicated character generator ROM, dual-ported display RAM, and logic to superimpose text and graphics onto a video signal. The OSD offers flexible formatting, multiple shadowing modes, and per-character color selection, allowing for the creation of sophisticated menus and information displays directly on the TV screen.

The device provides extensive analog control capabilities via multiple Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) digital-to-analog converters, including eight 6-bit PWMs and one high-precision 14-bit PWM (TDAC). The P87C055 variant features One-Time Programmable (OTP) EPROM memory, allowing for user programming of both the application code and the OSD character font set, enabling customization and prototyping.
